GET performed the soils explorations and geotechnical engineering studies for the Flight Works Alabama AIDT Aviation Education Center at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley. The project included an approximate 18,500 square foot irregular shaped single story, steel frame structure with portions of the eave height constructed at 20 feet. Initially due to soft compressible soils at the site, recommendations were made to support the structure and interior floor slabs on piling. Consultation among the design team concluded that geofoam fill would be used in lieu of soil fill. The reduced weight of the geofoam fill lowered the settlement estimates which resulted in allowing both the structure and interior slab to be supported on shallow foundations.
Site preparation and project pavement section recommendations were given. Construction engineering oversight and construction materials testing were provided through completion of project.
