GET performed the soils explorations and geotechnical engineering studies for the University of South Alabama’s Physician Office Building constructed adjacent to the Free Standing Emergency Building in west Mobile, Alabama. Both structures are close to the intersection of Hillcrest Road and Old Shell Road near the main campus. The 3-story structure has an approximate 30,000 square foot footprint and is constructed on a 3-acre portion of a 40-acre parcel of land owned by the school. The project also includes the design and construction of both heavy and light duty drives and parking to accommodate regular traffic loading as well as ambulance and truck traffic.
The geotechnical findings allowed the structures to be founded on spread foundations once recommended site preparations had been completed. The 3-acre parcel for the project had a 30 foot grade differential with the building pad location requiring 7 feet of cut and up to 6 feet of fill to level the site for the structure. The site also had loose insitu soils near the surface requiring removal and replaced with specified compacted fill. GET also addressed preparation/recommendations for the light and heavy duty pavements that required substantial cut and fill operations in order to construct the pavements.
GET provided the construction materials testing and engineering support during the construction phase of the project and worked with the project structural engineer to provide special inspections for the project.
